Summer Songstress Finalists

Now that it’s pretty much May, all the summer songs are out in full force. “Call Me Maybe” and “Sexy and I Know It” are finally winding down the charts, and all the pop queens are vying for the title of Top Summer Songstress, and I cannot wait to see who ends up on top!

To begin, Nicki Minaj has a new song out (“Starship”) that definitely has summer written all over it. It’s got a peppy beat, and as always with Nicki’s music, it’s got a certain edge to it. I wouldn’t go as far as comparing it to the never-gets-old summer favorite “Super Bass,” but I think it’s definitely gonna be a contender for song of the summer.

For something a little darker, there’s “Where Have You Been” by Rihanna, which is also a very typical Rihanna ditty. It’s somewhat club, but also very radio-friendly. Personally, I prefer “We Found Love” to this newer single, but it hasn’t even hit the radio yet (look out for it come May 8), so there could be a new radio mix out that could really take off.

Between the two, I’ve gotta give the edge to Nicki, if only because fans have been waiting for her to release something new for MONTHS. Besides, Rihanna will have plenty of time to shine in the new Battleship movie she’s starring in. Looking forward to Ri-Ri sporting a military cut!

On the other hand, there are still a lot of wild cards out there. Lady Gaga has been the center of many rumors lately, because everyone wants to know if she will or won’t release “Heavy Metal Lover” as the next (and final?) single off Born This Way. It’s a catchy song, yes, but I don’t know if I would say it’s got summer written all over it.

Then there are the perennial summer divas Katy Perry and Ke$ha, both of whom have been kind of quiet lately. However, Katy Perry has recently been seen sporting a new emo look. I’m not exactly sold on it, because I think it’s a bit too much with her hair and skin tone, but if it’s just a precursor to a new album or viral music video, I have to admit I am intrigued.

And ya never know what’s gonna happen with Britney! She always seems to come out of nowhere with something new and fun, so fingers crossed she doesn’t let us down this time around!
