Your lifestyle, your quirk
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love to see celebrities using their fame for good causes! Sure, Paul Wesley’s character on The Vampire Diaries, Stefan Salvatore, may be a sometimes-murderous undead blood sucker, but off screen he’s all about animal welfare. Wesley and his real-life wife, Torrey DeVitto, who acts alongside him on TVD (and who has a supporting role as diabolical Melissa Hastings on Pretty Little Liars), have been confirmed as the hosts of The Humane Society of the United States’ H-Couture 2012.
I’m a big animal welfare activist myself, so I’m happy to see stars that have a large following with young adults raising awareness for such an important cause!
The swanky fashion show will be held at a private estate in Brentwood, California, on Saturday, September 22, and will feature high-fashion for men and women, designed specifically to be “animal-friendly.” On his website, Wesley calls it “Conscious couture.”
“We are excited to be hosting the first ever H-Couture event on behalf of The Humane Society of the United States, because we both support events that promote compassion for animals,” Paul says.
“Fashion should be fun, and I don’t see how wearing animal fur can be anything other than cruel and unnecessary,” agrees Torrey. “This event will show that anyone can be fashion-conscious without animals having to pay the price.”
In addition to hosting the show, Paul and Torrey are launching the No Fur Pin campaign to invite their Hollywood friends to make a pledge not to wear fur.
“We’re delighted that Paul and Torrey are on board for our first major fashion event. Designers and their celebrity clients are key to setting new trends that can affect societal values, and supporting fur-free fashion can help prevent the suffering and save the lives of millions of both wild caught and captive-bred animals,” says Beverly Kaskey, senior director of The HSUS’s Hollywood Outreach program.
Proceeds from H-Couture 2012 will go toward encouraging awareness, exposing major retailers that carry fur but make false claims that it’s faux, and educating design students on alternatives to fur.
It sounds like a great event, and I’m thrilled that Wesley and DeVitto are taking a stand against animal abuse! And they’re not the only TVD cast members that are super philanthropic – their co-star Ian Somerhalder has held benefits supporting the St. Tammany Humane Society in Louisiana. He was also involved in the cleanup after the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling disaster on April 22, 2010; supports the It Gets Better Project, which makes it a goal to prevent suicide among LGBT youth associated with The Trevor Project; and even launched his own charitable foundation. The Ian Somerhalder Foundation aims to educate people on the importance of protecting the environment and animals. This year he tweeted: "Instead of gifts this year, my birthday wish is that we come together and raise funds to support projects that protect our habitat and nurture our furry friends.” What a guy!
This is only making me love TVD more! Can’t wait to start recapping the show when new episodes begin in September.
