Ryan Lochte, Superstar?
Of all of the Olympic athletes who could possibly get their own reality show, one swimmer is reportedly fielding multiple offers. Ryan Lochte may get his own reality show in addition to a slew of endorsements and possible modeling gigs. Basically, Lochte’s 15 minutes of fame are just beginning. He has already made his acting debut: after Will Ferrell said he would love to have the swimmer star in a video for his website, Lochte starred in a new Funny or Die clip. He’s already working with acting heavyweights; his costars are Patrick Stewart, Jason Statham, Simon Pegg, and Maisie Williams.
The handsome swimmer has been picking up a number of sponsors. Fortune magazine estimates that he earned $2.3 million in endorsements over the past year through deals with Speedo, Gillette, Proctor & Gamble, Nissan, Ralph Lauren, and AT&T. Lochte’s agent, Erika White, says that so many deals have come up that there is “little room for adding more.”
The New York Daily News reports that Lochte has been offered two different reality show concepts and is in talks about another. The Rochester, New York, native plans to move to Los Angeles after the Games, according to The Huffington Post. He’s “on a mission to be on TV, in films and more.” The 28-year-old has said that he wants to appear on Dancing with the Stars, a televised competition that seems to love athletes. There are even rumors that the gold medalist could be considered to be the next Bachelor. When his mother, Ike Lochte, said that her son had a lot of one-night stands, the swimmer went into damage-control mode and said that he may look to settle down once the Games are over; perhaps he would look to settle down with a woman he meets through the Hunger Games of reality dating shows?
Wonder what a Ryan Lochte reality show would include? Think of all of the crazy things he’s done so far that have captured the country’s attention:
The Grill: Lochte donned the grill that the world is still talking about after winning a gold medal. While he was asked not to wear it on the podium, he posed wearing it with his medal for photographers. The blingin’ grill is encrusted with diamonds in an American flag design. It was created by rapper Paul Wall and celebrity designer Johnny Dang, and it reportedly cost $25,000. If that’s how he rolls, he must have a pretty ballin’ lifestyle.
The Catchphrase: It takes some television shows a few episodes to spawn a catchphrase, but Lochte already has one ready. He often uses “Jeah,” a word taken from rapper Young Jeezy. In fact, before shutting down his website to adhere to International Olympic Committee rules, Lochte sold sunglasses with “Jeah,” “Reezy,” and his own last name on them online. See, he already has the merchandise angle covered, because there are probably boxes of unsold “Jeah” sunglasses sitting in a box somewhere.
The Shoes: The man has sneakers that have his name on the soles. Not written on the soles with a Sharpie, these shoes were made with his name embedded in a different color. He has his own sneaker line with Speedo (who knew they made shoes?) that have “Ryan” spelled out on one sole, “Lochte” on the other, and have a shiny green upper portion. He claims to have about 130 pairs of sneakers, meaning that he will likely be able to bust out some amazing looks on a reality TV show.
The Socializing: He plays cards with Michael Phelps. As odd as it sounds, I would watch an episode where the two played spades. In an interview with Today.com, Ike Lochte said that her son has a lot of one-night stands because he doesn’t have time for a relationship. While the Lochte camp immediately tried to clear up the PR mess by saying he just goes on a lot of dates, an active, eligible bachelor might be fun to watch.
The Risks: Lochte is a bit of a daredevil. He drives his Range Rover with his knees, he skateboards, and he surfs. A daredevil should keep audiences interested. Plus, he has admitted to peeing in the pool, so there will no doubt be a few people who watch just to see if they can tell when he’s secretly relieving himself.
Whether he just appears on Dancing with the Stars or he gets his own show, there is no doubt that we’ll be seeing a lot more of Ryan Lochte after the Games are over.
