Now that a crop of summer blockbusters have featured arrow-toting heroes, archery’s popularity is on the rise. Once a somewhat obscure event, characters in novels, comic books, and recent films, most notably Katniss of The Hunger Games, have ignited interest in this challenging sport. Not only are more viewers watching the Olympic event, but more people are taking archery up for themselves.Read More »

Oscar Pistorius is fast becoming one of the most talked-about Olympians. He will compete for South Africa in the individual 400m race and the 4x400m relay. Pistorius’ speed is not the only thing earning him attention, it’s the fact that he’s a double amputee and will also be competing in the Paralympic Games. This is historic, as no athlete has ever competed in both Games. His pair of prosthetic legs have earned him the nickname “Blade Runner,” as it looks like his limbs cut through the air as he runs.Read More »

Everyone’s childhood dream has just been realized: two cars raced on a human-scale Hot Wheels track. On June 30th, two cars entered a life-sized version of Hot Wheels’ newest toy, the Double Dare Snare, at the Summer X-Games in Los Angeles, California. Two cars drive on two separate tracks that merge into one loop, then the track ends in a jump. Lance Armstrong cannot seem to escape the accusations of doping that have been following him since his first Tour de France win in 1999. The most recent round of accusations that have cropped up – or, rather, resurfaced – have barred the 40-year-old athlete from participating in Ironman France at the end of the month.

Understandably, Armstrong is furious. He has put in countless hours training for this massive event and now is being denied participation based on accusations he insists are “baseless” and “motivated by spite.”Read More »

Selfless Sportmanship

in category of Opinions, Abby Lee Hood, sports

A truly inspiring act of selflessness was seen on Saturday at the Ohio Division III track and field state meet. West Liberty-Salem (Ohio) High junior Meghan Vogel won a state medal, but that isn’t the most remarkable thing about her performance. A fellow competitor,  Arlington (Ohio) High sophomore Arden McMath, collapsed on the field just in front on the finish line, and Vogel picked her back up and pretty much carried the girl across the finish line.Read More »
