Not So Marvelous Measles

in category of Weird News, Health & Fitness, Quirked, books, Colleen Walsh-Jervis, wtf

Though many of us have probably never seen measles firsthand because of successful vaccinations and immunizations, the disease still exists. Not only that, it’s extremely contagious and it’s staging a comeback. Don’t worry, though, because one author/mother/anti-vaccination advocate says that the measles are a “marvelous” adventure! She even wrote a picture book about it to explain how childhood diseases are beneficial to the body.Read More »

Life According to the Kama Sutra

in category of Extracurricular, Lifestyle, Abby Lee Hood, books, Kama sutra, relationships, sex

The Kama Sutra, translated as "Aphorisms on Love," is one of the world's best-known sexual texts. Historians think it first appeared between 400 and 200 BCE. It is an ancient Hindu book, originally written in Sanskrit by Vātsyāyana, a Hindu philosopher who lived in India during the time.

The Kama Sutra isn't completely about sex, by the way. While it is considered the definitive authority on human sexual behavior, it also encompasses an entire way of life. Since Vātsyāyana was a philosopher, his writings covered more than just sexual positions.Read More »

Life, On The Line

in category of Entertainment Madness, Quirked, Audra Rundle, books

My husband recommends books sparingly to me, but ever single one he has suggested has had a major impact on me. Now I know that if he casually mentions a title and says I “might like it,” then I’d best get reading. Last year, he threw one my way that completely changed the way I view fine dining. Life, On the Line by Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas, is the autobiography of one of the world’s top chefs, Grant Achatz.Read More »

A Hard Hobbit to Break

in category of Entertainment Madness, Quirked, books, humor, Remy Carreiro

Let me begin this literary journey by saying some of my very favorite people are gay. So as juvenile as the title to this article may seem, it is more a playful, satirical examination of who in that initial crew of ringbearers may or may not have been gay. Again, it’s by no means a condemnation. If anything, an openly gay dwarf would only make the series even cooler. So if you are offended, or think this is a bothersome concept, please feel free to click one of our other articles.Read More »

This may be the end of literature as we know it. You may not want to hear it, but the Kardashian sisters are going to collaborate and write a science fiction novel. No, not Kim and Kourtney. Kendall and Kylie Jenner, the younger members of the Kardashian clan, are going to be writing a book set “two hundred years in the future,” and get this! It’s going to be about two sisters. Crazy, right? The pair say that it’ll have some deep subject matter, that it won’t be full of celebrity gossip.Read More »

Stepping Out of Your Literary Comfort Zone

in category of Books, Abby Lee Hood, books, reading, writing

Sometimes you just have to step out of your comfort zone. My boyfriend and I are both avid readers. We are always recommending new reads to each other and discussing our favorite authors. While we both love to read, our tastes in literature could not be further apart. I like the classics; his tastes are a bit more...well, nerdy. I mean, don't get me wrong, I certainly embrace my inner nerd. I love Harry Potter and Transformers and Pokemon, etc. But even I have my limits. Let's just say Star Wars is not my forte.Read More »

Books Still Have Value – to Thieves

in category of Weird News, books, StyleQuirk

Many people believe that there is no money in physical books these days, but there are some thieves who would disagree. Two men were arrested on June 15 for stealing nearly 250 library books and trying to remove all of the library’s labels. They’re not the first, and they likely will not be the last. Public libraries are free to area residents and allow cardholders to borrow materials, so some dishonest patrons have decided to make money by removing all signs of library ownership and selling the book.Read More »
