3D Virtual Fittings Make Eyeglass Purchases Easy

in category of Technology, Ashley Davis

Glasses are one of the most difficult accessories to decide upon. When we need a new pair of frames, we might spend hours in a store trying on dozens of glasses, unable to decide whether they look good or not. Sometimes we don’t have anyone to consult, either. We buy a pair, thinking they look good…and then a friend starts laughing: “They look weird on you!”

DITTO, an online eyewear retailer, allows us to try on glasses through 3D technology. When you log on, you record a short video of yourself via a webcam. The software creates a 3D model of your face. Then you can start looking through the frames and try some on. When you try a pair on, you can scroll around 180 degrees. Once you narrow it down to a few, you are able to use a side-by-side snapshot feature to decide on one. If you still can’t decide, the site allows you to share the snapshots on your Facebook so your friends can leave feedback.

The combination of 3D and social media may convince many to purchase frames online rather than in the store. Looking at your frames in 3D may also be better than looking in the mirror, since the scroll feature lets you see how they look from all angles.

This invention may stop us from buying those crazy glasses we are often tempted to try…or it might even make us more convinced we look good in them. Try it out and see!
