Battle of the Zuckerbergs!
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is facing some new competition – from his sister. Okay, so maybe she isn’t individually a threat to him or his business, but it is rather ironic that she is working for Google, one of Facebook’s direct competitors in the social media world.
How did this come about? Arielle Zuckerberg recently became a Google employee when her previous place of employment, Wildfire Interactive, was bought out by Google. Arielle listed on her blog that she is Google’s new junior product manager.
A photo of Arielle sitting at her workspace sporting a red Wildfire t-shirt shows her smiling happily, while appearing to be working with a tool kit on an internal computer part. She looks ever bit the female counterpart of her incredibly wealthy older brother.
Arielle likely doesn’t mind her new employer, as it not like Mark is against hiring family members who want to work for him. Their sister, Randi Zuckerberg, was formerly the director of marketing for Facebook before leaving the company last August.
There doesn’t appear to be any bad blood between the relatives, as Randi good-naturedly pokes fun at the irony of their situation by tweeting, “Congrats Wildfire! There are officially now more Zuckerberg family members working for Google than Facebook! #awkward ;)”
Mark is not known to make many statements to the press about his personal life, but it would be fun to hear what he had to say about his little sister’s new job title.
Mark created the prototype of Facebook form his dorm room while still attending Harvard, and launched it in 2004. The site soon expanded to other campuses before eventually being opened up to everyone – college student or not – and gaining more than 500 million users worldwide.
Mark told Wired magazine in 2010 what his goal for Facebook is: "The thing I really care about is the mission, making the world open."
Mark was further thrust into the world spotlight when the movie The Social Network came out, which was based on Facebook’s beginnings. The filmt took a great deal of creative liberty and portrayed Mark as egotistical and, well, kind of an a-hole. Although Mark told the media that he would have preferred no one made a movie about him until after he was dead, he handled the movie well, and even poked fun at himself a bit by appearing on Saturday Night Live to help promote it.
Today, Mark is one of the wealthiest and most influential people in the world.
