Up All Night Ep. 5 Recap
As a former babysitter, I know how desperate some parents are to find reliable childcare so that they can enjoy a night out. In this episode, the Brinkleys compare what their life was like three years earlier, like going to a Silversun Pickups concert on a Saturday night, with now, when they’re eating frozen meals for dinner. They decide this needs to change and work on finding a babysitter. Reagan gets in touch with their old sitter, Vanessa, who is now free again because the new couple she started sitting for is getting a divorce and will no longer need her services. Reagan and Chris jump on the opportunity to have a Saturday night out and eagerly ask her to be their sitter.
Scott tells Chris that he is upset because his ex-wife Connie is already dating again. Chris decides to set Chris up with Vanessa the babysitter because he thinks they would be a good pair. Turns out he was right. While the Brinkleys are out on a double date with Jerry and Ava at a bar, Reagan texts Vanessa but gets no response.
Jerry is as annoying as ever; he is always talking about all of the people he knows and the amazing new things he has tried. He keeps suggesting things to Ava like a dirty martini or calamari, which she pretends to like to appear open-minded. As Reagan drinks more, she finally outs Ava as not liking calamari, so Jerry tells her to speak up about what she likes and doesn’t like.
Reagan worries that there’s an emergency at home when she doesn’t get a response back from Vanessa. The Brinkleys decide to rush home where they find Vanessa and Scott kissing on the couch. Guess it was a love connection. Reagan is mad at Chris when she learns that he set them up because it means that they have lost a babysitter. If she has a date with Scott on Saturdays, she’s no longer able to babysit.
Desperate for more nights out (like an upcoming movie screening in a graveyard with Ava and Jerry…Jerry’s into weird stuff). the Brinkleys decide to steal a neighbor’s babysitter, Hilary. They offer to pay her three times the amount the neighbors pay, plus unlimited snacks.
While out at the movie in the graveyard with Jerry and Ava, Jerry is still quite annoying and names the group “The Four Horsemen of the Chillpocalypse.” They serve an Indian-themed picnic to go with the Bollywood film being shown. Scott and Vanessa join the group as well. During the movie, Scott and Vanessa make out while Jerry and Ava feed each other and speak in baby talk, forcing Chris and Reagan to make out to distract themselves. Unfortunately, they are interrupted by a call from Hilary, who thinks she sees someone in the backyard. The Brinkleys rush home to discover Terry, the neighbor they stole Hilary from, is standing horror movie villain-style in the backyard. She’s angry and slightly crazed because she was forced to stay home and make a cat puzzle because she is now without a sitter. The Brinkleys are forced to let Hilary go back to sitting for Terry and are left without a sitter again.
Next weekend, the Brinkleys try a new sitter, but she proves to be too irresponsible to leave Amy with. Scott shows up and offers to watch Amy because Vanessa just dumped him and he doesn’t feel like going to the Silversun Pickups concert without her. Reagan and Chris rush off to the concert, where they meet up with a feuding Ava and Jerry. Ava has become picky and vocal and mocks Jerry’s way of talking about everyone he knows and his niche interests. While the Brinkleys hope this means that Jerry is on his way out, Ava is more turned on by their arguments than ever before.
After receiving a cute photo from Scott with him and Amy, Chris and Reagan start to feel guilty about leaving him at home. They decide to pack a lot of excitement into a couple of songs, then to go home early. Reagan gets on the stage (where the Silversun Pickups are making a cameo) and Chris crowd surfs. They are subsequently banned from the club (you can be banned for crowd surfing?). They are proud that they could accomplish this after having a baby. Chris realizes that he lost his keys, wallet, and phone while crowd surfing or perhaps from being mugged, so they have to call Scott to pick them up. When he arrives, he is also proud of them for getting banned. Chris and Reagan decide to take Amy home and let Scott enjoy the rest of the show. While inside, Scott makes googly eyes at a lady, so he may have a new love interest.
The episode ends with Ava and Jerry making out, so no, it’s not over yet. The Brinkleys will suffer through Jerry for another week. I’m starting to wonder why Ava and Jerry don’t just go on a few solo dates, or why the Brinkleys are so desperate to go out on a group date with a man they hate. But hey, now that they have no babysitter again, I guess they won’t have to worry about hanging out with Jerry every Saturday.
