Bye, Bye Jersey Shore!

What might have been the most controversial reality show ever to grace MTV’s network, or even television in general, is coming to an end after the upcoming season. That’s right, Jersey Shore is airing its final season! The juiceheads are going home, Snooki’s reproduced, and the Shore is generally emptying out. Here’s a quick look at what’s happened and why the show is ending.

Because the shows stars are getting older – as before mentioned, Snooki just had a kid – MTV announced on Thursday, August 30, that the sixth season of Jersey Shore would be its last. Can you believe the “Shore” first aired in 2009? It feels like so long ago! After all, the cast members have been in the news and have been gossiped about ever since the first episode. No wonder we feel like they’ve been here forever.

The show originally set out to depict the crazy lifestyles of 20-somethings Snooki, J-Woww, Pauly D, Sammy Sweetheart, The Situation, and Vinnie. We’ve also seen a new girl come aboard, Deena. The drama escalated, and it seemed that someone was always getting into a fight, all of them were forever getting drunk, throwing around the mallard phone, crying, vomiting, tanning, or working out. The show coined the phrase, “GTL,” or “Gym, Tan, Laundry.” That was the mantra of the guys on the show, and they followed it to a tee.

Italian-Americans stewed over the persona that the “Shore” members were creating for others of the same culture, feeling they were badly represented by the wacky twenty-somethings.

While Jersey Shore is shutting down, you can still get your fill of the drama elsewhere. Spinoff shows like The Pauly D Project and Snooki and J-Woww are airing, so you’ll be able to see the same characters there. However, ratings are already low, so it’s uncertain as to how long these shows will last. My instincts tell me that when Snooki has her baby, the show will either get really popular or she will have to stop doing reality television altogether.

What are your favorite memories from the Shore crew? Did you watch the show at all? It was certainly a very controversial and entertaining run! Never fear, you’ve got one season left. I’m not sure what our children will do, though…joking!
