I’ve been a fan of Happy Endings
since the beginning of this season (I tuned in by accident and caught the season premiere, which literally made me laugh to the point of tears, and I then promptly watched the entire first season in two days), and I’ve enjoyed the season, but I’ve got to say that the show is really finding its way lately. This has been happening to the other Wednesday night shows (Suburgatory
has been successful at finding a proper balance between outrageous comedy and subtle humor lately, and Revenge
has almost gotten better every single episode this year), but in the last two weeks, Happy Endings
has truly laid down the gauntlet. I will finally put it out there: it’s the funniest show on TV (this is somewhat buoyed by the fact that Community
is on hiatus, but it’s no small feat—I watch a lot of TV).
Three episodes in a row now have provided the fastest, smartest, most outrageous humor anywhere on network TV, and I am so glad I’m here to witness it. Everything about tonight’s episode was sheer perfection. Brad and Jane’s one-liners, Max’s hibernation, Alex’s missed cues; everything was spot on. I do have to give the most props to Brad and Jane, though, because their fake fight was flat-out AH-MAH-ZING!
I think what’s so great about this show is that every week, each of its six characters have time to shine. Furthermore, it’s obvious that the actors take the writing to the next level. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Brad and Jane’s fake fight. I can’t help but wonder how many takes they spent riffing insults at each other—I can only hope that there are some extensive deleted scenes and outtakes on the DVD!
