Your lifestyle, your quirk
How I Met Your Mother was one of my favorite comedies the year it debuted (I can’t believe that was nearly eight years ago!), but over the seasons I found myself getting a little bored with the storyline. I mean, this guy is literally spending years telling his kids about all of the random hookups he had before meeting their mother; if I was his wife, I’d be pissed!
Lately I’ve gotten reacquainted with the show thanks to cable reruns and remember exactly why I liked it – especially Barney, who I’ve always found way more interesting than Ted and his wife-quest, anyway. And I really like the more recent storyline of the evolution of Barney and Robin’s non-conventional relationship.
The show is preparing for its eighth season in the fall, which many fans expected to be its last, but this week it appears a ninth season is close to becoming a reality. At least, that's the word from CBS president Nina Tassler, who told assembled journalists at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that she was "pretty optimistic" season nine would occur.
"Certainly [creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays] have a very strategic wrap-up to the show [whenever it does end]," she said. "They know we want the show to come back next year. We're not there in terms of resolving the season. We're in early conversations and we're pretty optimistic."
But don’t jump for joy yet, HIMYM fans. It looks like Jason Segel most likely won’t be involved after season eight!
He apparently said in an interview, "It's great to do some 'rated R' stuff again, because I've been playing the nice guy for quite a long time now. That's why I'm gonna quit How I Met Your Mother after the eighth season."
However, according to the actor's rep:
"Perhaps something got lost in translation, but season nine hasn't even been addressed yet."
While it’s still only in the discussion phase, sources close to the series seem pretty certain that if, in fact, season nine does come to fruition, not only will Jason be out, but so will Alyson Hannigan. I just can’t picture the show without Marshall and Lilly!
"Jason and Alyson [Hannigan] are the two least likely to want to do a season nine. It would take a lot of money to keep them. A lot."
Sure, they can have Lilly and Marshall move away but, if this is the case, I think the show should just wrap at the end of season eight. The cast has great chemistry, and it would be a shame after all these years for it to end without some of its most beloved characters on board. Plus, always better to go out on a high note than to wait till the show has jumped the shark. What do you think?
By the way, I really hope the “mother” gets more than a quick spot in the final minutes of the show finale once she finally appears. After all the anticipation, her character deserves some development, too!
HIMYM returns to CBS on Monday, September 24 at 8 p.m.
